How Process Improvement Can Help Your Business

Wile E. Coyote Is My Process Improvement Hero

Of all the heros and superheros I have known, Wile E. Coyote has never been on that list. I only recently discovered an ardent admiration for Mr. Coyote. Why? Because, he is a process improvement expert. He is a tenacious problem solving animal and an avid proponent of Plan-Do-Check-Act. Mr. Coyote may not realize how good he is but he does have a fan club. At this writing there are five fan pages on Facebook regarding Wile E. Coyote with a grand total of over 19,000 likes/members. Mr. Coyote may not even realize his process improvement process is classic. Nevertheless, here is what Mr. Coyote does that is so amazing.

Container Transport Vehicle PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Fortune 100 Division: CTV Mate

Problem: Improve delivery service in new markets by reducing the process time of the entire morning sort.
Solution: Implemented a conveyor system and trailer with side doors, which eliminated the necessity to unload the freight containers from trailers.
Results: All new facilities had the new conveyor system installed, which reduced the total sort time by 10 minutes and improved delivery service two additional percentage points.  This conveyor system was adopted nationwide.  Where space was available, old facilities were retrofitted when it was economically feasible.

Letter Sort PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Fortune 100 Division: Letter Sort

Problem:  Improve delivery service in the New York City market by reducing the process time on small packages and letters.
Solution: Establish a concurrent small package and letter sort system separate from the package sort and conveyor.
Results:  Total sort time was reduced by 15 minutes, which improved delivery service three additional percentage points.  This system was adopted nationwide.

DC-10 Ramp Operations PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Fortune 100 Cargo Aircraft Operations: DC-10

Problem:  Plan the introduction of the inaugural wide body cargo aircraft operations in the field replacing three narrow body aircraft while maintaining, at least, the same level of service to the delivery customer.
Solution:  Involve all operations personnel.  Analyze the operation in its smallest parts.  Reduce cycle times and transportation times while maximizing the number of simultaneous operations.
Results:  Service improved to all delivery stations while minimizing capital expenditure.

Hub Simulation PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Fortune 100 Distribution Center: Hub Simulation

Problem: Poor productivity and work flows in a regional distribution center.
Solution: Establish a system simulation project to mathematically project inbound to outbound package flows at 20,000 packages per hour.

Results: Package flows were controlled to volumes up to and including 25,000 packages per hour.   Direct labor productivity improved 20 percent in three months.
