clownSmile! It ain’t gonna kill ya! How many of you haven’t smiled yet today? Okay, let’s start now and get our day launched in the right direction. Image we just met and without saying anything, show your biggest, toothiest grin! Hold that pose and count to 10, then relax.

This may seem silly, but there are three reasons to concentrate on smiling. They are:

  • Smiling makes you look friendly and approachable.
  • When you smile, your voice follows.
  • The value of a smile is priceless!
  1. If you ever visited the circus as a kid, it’s likely that you remember the clown who wore the smile and not the frown. Hopefully, you are not coulrophobic. Think about it—say you needed directions. Would you be more likely to approach someone who looked angry or frustrated or would you look around for a more friendly face? As you go about your daily routine today, wear a smile as part of the pride you demonstrate as being a skilled professional.
  2. When people smile, notice the tone of their voice as they speak. You will hear a positive difference when compared to listening to a person who has an unhappy facial expression. Since it takes fewer muscles in the face to smile, you are more relaxed; physically less tense when you smile. The truth is, what we wear on the “outside” (our smiles) can directly affect what others hear. Be aware of this connection. When you’re feeling tired or stressed, try smiling and expect to sound and feel more positive.
  3. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a smile is priceless. Why? A smile is something you can give to anyone, anywhere, at any time. A simple smile can make a world of difference to a sad child or an ill-mannered customer. When you share your smile today, notice how often that smile is returned to you. Make it a game. How many smiles will you give and win back? And just keep passing it on.

Smiling is great for everyone’s disposition because:

  • Smiling makes you look friendly and approachable.
  • When you smile, your voice follows.
  • The value of a smile is priceless!
